Admissions On the Day for Kingston Hospital

Location: Kingston upon Thames

Client: Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Value: £250,000 (out of total £1.3m for overall project)

Contract type: Nominated subcontractor to Storm Building Ltd for refurbishment and extension project.

Overview

Kingston Hospital required a new extension to the Esher Wing on the second floor, plus refurbishment of an existing ward, with both units comprising Admissions on the Day for planned surgeries.

Barton Knight was nominated by main contractor Storm Building Ltd, for its specialist skills in electrical works. Barton Knight supplied and installed the cabling according to a design by services consultant Bianco Sale, which was also subcontracted to Storm Building Ltd.

Key Works

As part of a complete refurbishment, the works included lighting, small power sockets on walls, distribution services, nurse call, and IT/network cabling.

An extension to the fire alarm system was also included as well as provision of supplies to mechanical services, CCTV and security.

“Barton Knight Contracting was able to deliver the supply and installation of the electrical works in the live environment of a hospital with minimum disruption, despite complications offered by COVID-19."

Kingston Hospital’s new Admissions on the Day unit opened in February 2021, after a six-month extension and refurbishment project. The existing second floor within the Esher Wing was part-refurbished and extended to create the new unit, which was designed to support patients undergoing planned surgery.

Storm Building Ltd was the main contractor awarded the £1.3 million contract to refurbish the existing clinical coding rooms, demolition of the existing extension, and erection of a new one, including associated services and structural works. The project began in September 2021 after a short delay and finished on time and within budget six months later.

Storm Building Ltd had approached Barton Knight earlier in the year due to the contracting team’s extensive expertise and experience in electrical works for the NHS. Barton Knight carried out the works according to designs by building services consultant Bianco Sale.

The electrical works included power, lighting, IT/network cabling, an extension to the fire alarm system and cabling for mechanical services, CCTV and security.

Admissions on the Day is located next to the hospital’s theatres, so patients can arrive at the unit on the morning of their surgery and move quickly into operating for their procedures. Every patient
attending Kingston Hospital for elective surgery now starts their admission within this dedicated unit.

Sarb Sandhu, Kingston Hospital’s Chief of Surgery and Planned Care, said: “This new unit will provide a much more efficient way for us to manage elective care. Patients coming in for planned procedures will be able to stay in one place, as opposed to being on wards across the hospital, and will benefit from a significantly smoother and quicker pathway, from arrival for their surgery through to having their procedure.

“Not only will this make a difference to our patients’ experience, but it will also mean we can see a greater number of patients for elective procedures, in a shorter space of time.”
